The belly of the universe opened towards us,
portly and heavy, an exposed body cavity that
revealed its inner workings of stars.
We forgot why we ever loved the city, and we
became annoyed by the incessant grumblings and
clamor of the buildings and people who were
always too busy to rest their feet or lay down their hearts.
Here in the placid spot by the sea, the waves
crashed on the shoulder of the sand and whispered
soft lullabies into our ears, sweet and assuring,
and we got the urge to call our mothers to sing them back.
I heard my mother telling me while baking cupcakes
that a pinch of salt brings out the sweetness of nectar,
that we are made of both salt and sugar, and are better for it,
and the darkness never felt so small and comforting.
Show me what you are made of,
I cried out to the world,
for we were made the same,
both light and dark, and better for it.
