Daylight Savings

Even when we turn back the clock,

anticipating the dark hours to come,

we are surprised each time of how soon they arrive,

how ghastly their shadows are,

pooling around our feet like ribbons and chains.

We wonder what we are saving for,

why we draw out winter longer,

why we sit in theatres to watch curtains close in the end.

But we are just as surprised when morning comes,

making it through the night with dreams and promises,

whispering secrets into our pillow cases and giving pats on the back,

the ways childhood taught us to hope.

And although we feel the night fall with heaviness,

we watch the sun rise with certainty.
