Tired of Waiting: Food Access in East Austin
“It’s just a lot of, ‘We don’t have’ … I can’t describe to them what (food access) looks like because it’s not here.” Northeast Austin communities are geographically isolated as a result of the segregationist policies of the 1928 Master Plan, forcing residents to travel further for basic necessities, including grocery stores. Residents are tired of being told their communities don’t have enough rooftops to support a grocery store and want proper food equity now. “If our own homegrown grocery store doesn’t see the value in our community, then we have to look somewhere else.” This story was published as part of the Helen M. Powell Fellowship and was made in collaboration and with the help of the Colony Park Neighborhood Association, the Moody Honors Program and the Center for Community Engagement. Partying During A Pandemic at UT
"It's cruel to the people who are cleaning up our campuses, our faculty, our staff, our custodial staff especially who are going to have to be dealing with the rippling effects of these reckless college students who are only thinking of themselves." When college students returned back to campus for the fall semester for in-person and online classes, one thing didn't change for some students: partying amidst a pandemic. Clusters of COVID-19 cases have emerged in West Campus, especially among Greek life, which could create rippling effects for UT and the Austin community. Since March 1, there are now more than 1,000 positive COVID-19 cases among UT students, faculty and staff. What will be the long-lasting effects of parties on the spread of COVID-19? Where Racism Still Stands
Though The University of Texas at Austin began to integrate its student body in 1956, the university is rooted in policies and practices meant to exclude students of color. Current Black students are still faced with the campus' racist history, forced daily to attend class in buildings named after segregationists and pass statues named for men associated with the Confederacy. From a World Away: Being an International Student During a Pandemic
On July 6, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, or ICE, announced that foreign students on F-1 and M-1 visas attending schools operating entirely online would not be allowed to remain in the U.S. for the fall semester. Due to the covid-19 pandemic alone, international students have had to face additional stress and challenges, including travel restrictions, employment opportunities, financial insecurity and time zone differences. Three people share their perspective on their experience as international students from what sometimes feels like a world away.
